Hello! My name is Corina and I study BA Digital Media at the University of Leeds. I am currently in my final year, after finishing a year-long placement as a Design Intern at the Walt Disney Company.

Before coming to Leeds, I completed my International Baccalaureate Diploma in Jakarta, Indonesia. I first heard about the University from my high school teacher who told me about its position as a Russell Group university and decided to pursue it after seeing its high ranking for my course along with the social and cultural aspects the city has to offer.

Before I left for Leeds, I remember feeling nervous and scared as I had never lived on my own before, let alone in a new country where I didn’t know anyone. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome I received from the University. Their ‘International Welcome Week’ provided me with a lot of opportunities to socialise and familiarise myself not only with the University but the city as well.

I’ve been at the University for almost four years now and it has been a great experience. My course offers both the theoretical and practical aspects of studying media. It allows me to develop a wide range of technical and practical skills from graphic design, web programming, filming, and animation, while also learning about the social and cultural aspects of digital media and its future development.

Additionally, the staff at the School of Media and Communications are extremely friendly and approachable. They are always happy to help if we ever encounter any difficulties, whether it be technical problems during workshops, difficulties in completing an assignment, or general support throughout the semester.

One of my favourite things about my course and the University in general, was the option to do a placement year/internship as part of my degree. The application process was tough, but the University's career service helped guide me throughout the process and notifying me of any placement opportunities.

I was fortunate enough to complete an internship with The Walt Disney Company. I worked as part of the in-house design team for the FOX and National Geographic channels, where I designed motion graphics for on-air promos, social media, and channel branding across a wide range of projects and platforms.

During the nine months of my internship, I’ve managed to work on about 95 different projects across the FOX and National Geographic Channels. This includes promos and ATL campaigns for some of the biggest shows on television, including The Walking Dead, War of the Worlds, NCIS, Running Wild with Bear Grylls, Air Crash Investigation and Car S.O.S.

The best thing about the University of Leeds is that the Leeds University Union offers over 300 different societies, which allows us to explore a wide range of interests outside of our course. There’s always something for everyone here to enjoy.

The University also offers a lot of support for its large community of international students, which eases the process of settling in when first moving to Leeds in September. I have been a member of several different societies throughout my time in Leeds, including the Indonesian society, Leeds Extended Reality society, and the Leeds eSports and Video Game society.

I am currently living in a shared house with some friends in Burley. However, I lived in Cityside accommodation during my first year, and in a private student accommodation during my second year.

Leeds is a great city to live in, especially for students. There are plenty of things to see and do, from its many shopping malls and restaurants to its thriving nightlife, and an array of cultural hotspots.

My personal favourite places in the city are either Bakery 164 or Opposite Café. Both are delightful spots to eat and hang out in front of the Parkinson steps.

If I’m not too busy studying, I’ll probably be exploring nature in the West Yorkshire area or trying out the many coffee shops in Leeds.
